In 2022, Sam Houston State University’s Criminal Justice department sought a complete overhaul of its online program, choosing to launch several of its degree pathways using a 5-week format. These courses were designed in Blackboard Learn’s newest iteration: Ultra. This special project was launched and transferred to my department where my team and I were responsible for course development.
These courses were designed to function in a fully automated format; knowledge checks trigger additional content availability. However, the department still wanted the student to feel “connected,” which required highly interactive modules, targeted videos, and the ability to interact with a course facilitator when needed.
As the manager of the CJ course development team, I was responsible for:
- Collaborating with subject matter experts
- Developing the course standardization guidelines
- Development and testing of automated features
- Communicating guidelines with other designers
- Communicating project status with administration
- Coordinating video production with the university media team
- Training faculty on the execution of automated courses
