Animation & Interactivity

Texas A&M launched a research-based program to help middle-school teachers deal with classroom disruptions using culturally responsive behavior management techniques. This program, X-CEL, contains microlessons that teachers can complete within a single planning period.

The client wanted something light-hearted & easy-to-understand while tackling difficult topics such as racism, stereotypes, and student alienation due to cultural perceptions. Initially, the project was slated for full video production, but after receiving a video sample, the client felt that animation would be a more suitable medium to deal with the difficult topics within the training.

Animation production considerably changed the estimated delivery date; the company required someone with a thorough understanding of high-yield animation, as well as the subject matter to meet strict deadlines while providing a “cute but effective” training package. I was brought on as an animation artist with subject matter expertise on middle school students.

As a contracted member of a small ID team, I was responsible for the production of over 80 animated videos ranging from 1-5 minutes long. To meet the strict deadlines, I utilized VYOND, an online animation program that allowed for the quick assembly of animated videos.

VYOND’s existing assets were limited, so I had to create custom templates and graphics to relay the concepts that the client required. The graphics had to match the existing templates to maintain the seamless, professional feel of the final training. In addition to creating animations that effectively explained the subject matter, I used visual cues to weave emotional connections between the characters, adding an additional dimension to the project that the client had not anticipated, but absolutely loved.

Upon animation completion, the files were handed off to team members who added interactive elements using Articulate 360, and final modules were deployed using a highly customized version of the Canvas LMS. This project, while extremely challenging, allowed me to stretch my creative skills as well as my instructional design capabilities to create one of my favorite training programs to date.
